ABOUT THE ARTIST

MICHAEL PETTIT PAINTINGS: MICHAEL PETTIT is a professional artist living in Cape Town. His paintings are included in many public, university and corporate collections. He holds BA Fine Arts and MA Fine Arts degrees and lectured before becoming a full-time artist. Michael has exhibited widely and recognition of his work spans four decades. ____ A feature of his work is its ambitiously broad range. Diversity is part of its total meaning. Recurring core themes, images, motifs, signs and symbols echo between pictures and integrate the work. ____ The absurd is celebrated. Surreal leaps and poetic conjunctions abound. There is mask as metaphor, theatre as ritual, visual wit, and allusions to art history. The variety of voice and the refusal of fixed meaning suggest a shifting, facetted state of being. Michael’s working process, too, is non-linear, moving in and out of different idioms and subjects. This intuitive, unforced approach allows ideas to evolve in their own way. His output evades neat categorisation but its arc can be seen and felt as one artist's statement. Michael Pettit aims to integrate sensation, feeling, and concept in rounded works of art that are both personal and universal.
